Wilhelm Thöny

Thöny, 1888 in Graz als Sohn eines Papiergroßhändlers geboren, erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Landeskunstschule in Graz. Er zeigte zunächst eine große musikalische Begabung und erhielt Klavierunterricht, sowie eine profunde Gesangsausbildung. Allgemein wurde ihm "eine schöne Baritonstimme, ein absolutes Gehör, ein ausgezeichnetes musikalisches Gedächtnis und eine starke schauspielerische Begabung" attestiert (Trude Aldrian).
1908 ging Thöny nach München an die Akademie und studierte Malerei unter Gabriel Hackl und Angelo Jank. 1920 trat er bereits als Maler öffentlich in Erscheinung.
Im Jahre 1913 wurde er zum Mitbegründer der Münchener Neuen Secession. Der Kriegsausbruch unterbrach die heitere Studentenzeit, und 1915 rückte Thöny als Einjährig-Freiwilliger beim k.k.Schützenregiment Nr.3 ein. Ende desselben Jahres heiratete er die Amerikanerin Fanny Walborg White, die er aus seiner Münchener Zeit kannte. Im Jahr darauf wurde die Tochter Margit geboren. Mit der Arbeit als Kriegsmaler und mittels verschiedener Portraitaufträge erhielt der Künstler die junge Familie. 1918 mit Kriegsende übersiedelte Thöny mit Frau und Kind in die Schweiz, in der Hoffnung dort bessere wirtschaftliche Verhältnisse anzutreffen. Die Ehe scheiterte bald darauf und Thöny kehrte nach München zurück, um dort zu arbeiten.
Noch vor dem Sommer 1923 war der Künstler wieder in Graz und im Herbst kam es gemeinsam mit Fritz Silberbauer, Alfred Wickenburg und Axel Leskoschek zur Begründung der Grazer Secession. 1925 traf er in der Amerikanerin Thea Herrmann die Frau seines Lebens. Das Ehepaar nahm regen und prägenden Anteil am kulturellen Leben der Stadt Graz. 1929 wurde Thöny zum Professor ernannt und besuchte zum ersten Mal Paris. Die Stadt faszinierte in dermaßen, daß der Künstler 1931 seine Zelte in Graz abbrach, um nach Frankreich zu übersiedeln. Bis 1938 war er in Paris und Südfrankreich tätig.
1938 emigrierte er nach New York, wo er auch 1949 verstarb.
Er war Träger zahlreicher Auszeichnungen und Medaillen sowie von vier österreichischen Staatspreisen. 1937 erhielt er die Ehrenurkunde der Weltausstellung in Paris.

Die Malerei Thönys ist Zeuge des Bestrebens die optischen Wunder der Welt festzuhalten oder wie es der Künstler selbst ausdrückt: "Und auf den weißen Blättern entsteht eine neue Welt, die Du selbst geschaffen hast und deren Herr du bist."
Geschickt setzt der Künstler die Farben in pastosem Pinselauftrag ein und arbeitet die buntleuchtenden Blumen im Konstrast zum blauen Hintergrund heraus. Der Blumenstrauß wird so zum Sinnbild prallen Lebens und ein Ausdruck purer Lebensfreude.Graz 1888 - 1949 New York
