Josef Floch

Josef Floch war ein österreichischer Künstler jüdischer Herkunft und wurde am 5. November 1894 in Wien geboren. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt er an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, wo er von 1913 bis 1918 bei Rudolf Bacher, Franz Rumpler und Hans Tichy studierte. Ein Jahr nach seinem Abschluss trat er als Mitglied in den Hagenbund ein, wo er in Folge an vielen Ausstellungen teilnahm und dem er bis zu dessen Auflösung 1938 stets verbunden blieb. Floch unternahm im Laufe seines Lebens zahlreiche Reisen. Seine Erste 1922 führte ihn nach Ägypten und Israel und hinterließ mit dem hellen Licht, der Landschaft und Kulturen, prägende Einflüsse. In den Niederlanden setzte er sich vermehrt mit der Kunst der Alten Niederländer wie Rembrandt und Vermeer auseinander.

Eine besondere Station in seinem Leben bildete der Umzug nach Paris im Jahre 1925, wo er sich mithilfe seines Freunden Willy Eisenschitz schnell in der Kunstszene etablierte. Es folgten diverse Ausstellungen in renommierten Institutionen wie dem Salon d´Automn, dem Salon des Tuileries und in der Galerie Berthe Weill, eine Zeitgenossin Ambroise Vollards, in der bis dato schon Künstler wie Modigliani oder Picasso ausgestellt wurden.

Im Jahre 1934 heiratete Josef Floch Hermine Fränkl, mit der er zusammen zwei Töchter bekam. Die zwei Weltkriege und die gezwungene Emigration der Familie 1941 nach New York, beschäftigten Josef Floch verständlicherweise sein Leben lang. Es zeigte sich das seine Kunst auch in Amerika bald große Erfolge erzielen sollte und so war Josef Floch bald mit Ausstellungen in Museen und Galerien vertreten. 1952 erschien eine Monografie über Josef Floch von Maximilian Gautier in Paris, die Österreichische Galerie widmete ihm 1972 eine große Retrospektive und
Typische Bildsujets für Flochs Arbeiten sind neben Landschaften vor allem Figurenstillleben und Porträts. Meist öffnet sich dem Betrachter ein Interieur mit einer in sich gekehrten, melancholisch anmutenden Figur. Neben Cézanne, der ihn vor allem in seinen Farben und Formen inspirierte, hatten Gauguin und van Gogh nachhaltigen Einfluss auf seinen Stil. Geprägt vom österreichischen Expressionismus interessierten Floch zunehmend die Bewegungen der französischen und italienischen Moderne.
