Provenance

Ambroise Vollard, inv. no. 7337 (label verso), directly from the artist;
private collection, Switzerland;
Galerie Salis, Salzburg;
acquired from the above by the mother of the present owner on 05 February 1991, since then private property, Austria

The painting used to belong to the collection of the famous art dealer Ambroise Vollard, as can be gathered from the label affixed to the back. Via a Swiss private collection, it passed into the possession of the Salzburg art dealer Mag. Thomas Salis-Samaden, who specialises in the trade and appraisal of French Impressionist works of art. When selling the work of art to the current owner, Mag. Salis-Samaden guaranteed that the painting was a genuine painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. After time-consuming and extensive research, we are convinced that the assessment by Thomas Salis-Samaden is correct and that the work of art is genuine. However, we should like to expressly point out that the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, which is in charge of compiling a catalogue raisonné, recently announced to the owner that it does not intend to include the painting in its catalogue raisonné.

The present owner of the both Renoir paintings lot no. 2017 and 2018 has asked us to inform all customers/bidders, that due to the reaction of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute he takes no warranty for the authenticity of the two paintings. Therefore also our auction house does not warrant or guarantee that these paintings have been carried out by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
