The painting has been in the U.S. for a long time. In the summer of 1961, it was auctioned for the first time at Sotheby's as an original work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir's greatest connoisseur of the period, the French art historian Francois Daulte, planned to include it in Volume IV of the catalogue raisonné he compiled. Daulte, however, died before the completion of the catalogue raisonné and the above-mentioned Volume IV has thus never been published. In June 2006, our painting was again offered at a Sotheby’s auction in London. During this auction, the Wildenstein-Plattner Institute, which is working on its own catalogue raisonné, raised doubts about the authenticity of the artwork. Notwithstanding, the Salzburg art dealer and previous owner of the work Mag. Thomas Salis-Samaden guaranteed the current owner the authenticity of the work of art. Following close examination of the work of art and detailed critical examination of the style, we too have come to the conclusion that it is an original work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The present owner of the both Renoir paintings lot no. 2017 and 2018 has asked us to inform all customers/bidders, that due to the reaction of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute he takes no warranty for the authenticity of the two paintings. Therefore also our auction house does not warrant or guarantee that these paintings have been carried out by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
