An eccentric tangle of brushstrokes in colours ranging from blue to grey and black dominate the large-format work. The entire canvas is covered by a composition rich in tension. One seems to discern letters, formulas or organising lines – especially when one considers the artist’s career.

Hans Staudacher, who was born in 1923 and died only two years ago, began as a self-taught artist with drawings, landscape watercolours and portraits, before finding role models and inspiration in artists such as Kubin, Klimt and Schiele. During several stays in post-war Paris, he came into contact with the painter George Mathieu and with Lettrism. This was a literary and artistic movement founded in Paris, which was basically concerned with breaking down words into letters.

In Hans Staudacher’s works, the different influences can be seen in his spontaneity in artistic creation as well as in his handling of colours and shapes. A unique interplay of abstract expressionism and lyrical Informel characterise his oeuvre.
