The present, lively landscape is closely related to a painting of the same size in the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, which is today identified as the work of a student of Jan Both, Wilhelm de Heusch (1625-1692). (Inv. No. 423) This painting, which came from Archduke Leopold Wilhelm's collection, was also listed as a work by Jan Both up until the 19th century and was engraved as such by Friedrich Rossmässler (around 1775-1858) for the series “The Imperial Royal Picture Gallery in the Belvedere in Vienna” in the 1820s. Flooded with his characteristic, glowing golden light, Both's landscapes were formative for the depictions of the Dutch "Italy Travelers" of the 17th century and met with enduring admiration.
