Today's Mondsee Castle was one of the oldest monasteries in Austria and existed from 748 until it was abolished in accordance with the Josephine church reform at the end of the 18th century. In 1809 Napoleon confiscated it during his campaign against Austria - according to tradition he is said to have stayed there himself. In 1810 he gave the castle to the royal Bavarian field marshal and Minister of State Carl Philipp von Wrede (1767-1838) in thanks for his support. Through inheritance and marriage, Mondsee Castle came into the possession of the Counts of Almeida around 1900.
