2025

The works of the renowned Austrian painter Alfons Walde (1891–1958) are in high demand internationally. For the first time, a catalogue raisonné of over 4,000 colour works is being published, with all of the pieces reproduced and scientifically documented in the book. The first part of the book traces Walde's life and, accompanied by 160 colour plates, pays tribute to his artistic achievements on a local, regional and national level. A bibliography, exhibition list and index of works complete the volume.
Hailing from Kitzbühel in Tyrol, the artist was influenced in his early work by encounters with the art of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele in Secessionist Vienna. In the early 1920s, his penchant for expressionist expression increasingly gave way to the realisation of his own pictorial concept in tectonically constructed landscapes, milieu depictions and nude modelling. He elevated snow and winter sports motifs to a unique level of intensity and liveliness. His diverse range of activities was complemented by poster designs and architectural works, making Alfons Walde one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century.
