The theme of the god Vulcan with his wife Venus enjoyed great popularity, especially in Venetian painting, in many variations, from multi-figure compositions in Vulcan's forge to loving depictions of the two of them with little Cupid. As attributes, an anvil and various tools are laid at the feet of the god of fire and forging, while the beautiful Venus on his lap has her gaze turned dreamily into the distance. The reduction of the pictorial theme to the two main figures in close-up view conveys a special closeness to the two embraced lovers.
