Historicism in the 19th century: a return to past styles.

What is historicism?

In the 19th century, it was an artistic movement characterised by a conscious return to earlier styles. Artists and craftspeople admired, collected and imitated past eras in order to reinterpret their formal language and combine it with contemporary techniques.

Influence from Eastern Europe and the Orient

Interest in historicism was not limited to Western Europe. Eastern European and Oriental art forms increasingly found their way into design, too. Russian silver, with its virtuoso cloisonné enamel decorations, was particularly notable. The bright colours, floral ornaments and elegant forms had an exotic and fascinating effect on Western European audiences.

Russian Revival: National Self-Confidence

In Russia itself, a movement known as the 'Russian Revival' of historicism developed. Styles from the 16th and 17th centuries were revived here, especially those from the magnificent era of the tsars. Famous workshops such as Fabergé and Pavel Ovchinnikov created silver objects that combined traditional motifs with the highest level of craftsmanship. These pieces exemplified technical skill and artistic mastery.

Perception in Western Europe

While these objects were regarded as exotic luxury items in Western Europe, national pride was at the forefront in Russia. They found their way into salons, art chambers, and private collections. In particular, the wealthy bourgeoisie used Russian silver to emphasise their social status and cultural aspirations.

International recognition at world exhibitions

The importance of Russian silver art was demonstrated at major world exhibitions, such as those in Paris (1867 and 1900) and Vienna (1873). Russian silver and enamel works were exhibited there and received numerous awards. At the same time, new arts and crafts museums helped to disseminate and popularise this art form.

Influence and inspiration

Russian silver was collected and served as inspiration for artisans in Russia and Europe. Historical techniques and forms were imitated or developed further in the spirit of historicism, shaping the arts and crafts of an entire era.
