MARIA LASSNIG was — not unexpectedly — the star of our final CONTEMPORARY ART auction in 2017! Lassnig’s painting of the young married couple Resch with the little goat kid in their arms is without question a significant document of her specific mode of painterly composition and her way of working in abstracted large forms. International interest in this painting was commensurate with Lassnig’s art-historical status, and with € 210,000 / € 264,600 paid, the couple will now be settling in another European country.
FRANZ WEST, an Austrian artist whose works have long been quite popular internationally, was present in the form of an object coveted by several collectors: his papier-mâché sculpture Nippes [Trinket]. From the starting price of € 50,000, a brisk back-and-forth led all the way up to € 145,000 / € 182,700, resounding proof of its exceptional creator’s sustained currency. This object also went to an international collector.
BALTASAR LOBO, who was originally from Spain, is ranked as one of the most important sculptors from the circle around Picasso, Brancusi, and Jean Arp. Lobo’s young woman, done in a wonderful harmony of soft forms peeled out of white Spanish marble, beckoned to domestic and foreign collectors alike, embodying a trophy that was eventually taken home for € 100,000 / € 126,000 by the winning bidder.
FRITZ WOTRUBA, who served to complement Lobo here as an Austrian counterpoint, was monumental and precise in his reduction of bodies architectonic and otherwise. His Torso, an outstanding example of form concentrated down to the bare essence, spent decades in a private collection. This sculpture, as well, sold for € 100,000 / € 126,000!
WOLFGANG HOLLEGHA and MARKUS PRACHENSKY, two of the most important figures from the group of post-1945 Austrian avant-garde painters associated with the “Galerie nächst St. Stefan”, set entirely new standards of price with their works in this auction, confirming the rising value of these “classics” with their unmistakable visual languages.
