buy nowFedor von Karacsay (1821–1912) was a Hungarian nobleman, artist, and cartographer known for his ethnographic and topographic works. Born into an aristocratic family, he received extensive military training and joined the Austro-Hungarian army. Alongside his military career, he developed a passion for art and cartography, as well as an interest in the cultures of the Balkans, particularly Montenegro.
He had a formative relationship with Petar II Petrović-Njegoš (1813-1851), the Prince-Bishop of Montenegro, who provided him an insight into the country's way of life and traditions. Karacsay documented Montenegrin folk culture, costumes and customs in numerous detailed drawings and watercolours. His works are considered valuable testimonies to the ethnographic and cultural diversity of the region in the first half of the 19th century. Additionally, he created the first comprehensive cartographic representation of Montenegro, which was of great geographical and military importance.
His travels took him further to Sicily and later to Persia, where he continued his artistic and documentary activities. Today, Karacsay's works are important cultural and historical sources that accurately depict the life and traditions of various regions.
