Waldmüller painted this self-portrait in 1841, presenting himself as a serious, mature man of 48. Rupert Feuchtmüller describes the portrait as follows: ‘... The lips are narrow, the large eyes directed at his reflection; a self-critical portrayal, perhaps somewhat uncertain and questioning. One might think to find in these facial features something of the harshness of the dispute in matters of art, but also of the offences and rejections that have befallen him.’ (Feuchtmüller, 1996, p. 128)
