The classicist composition of the Visitation of Mary corresponds to the original signed version by Adriaen van der Werff, which was created in 1708 and can be found in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich today (oil on wood; 81.5 x 57.6 cm, Inv. No. 253). It was executed for Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658-1716) together with 15 other paintings from the life of Mary, which were created between 1705 and 1716.
In a publication in 1987, Dr. Barbara Gaehtgens identified this painting as a copy, but she has recently reviewed it again based on a photograph. Due to the high quality of execution, it is likely to have been created directly in van der Werff's workshop.
