Friedrich Gauermann wurde am 20. September 1807 in Miesenbach, Niederösterreich, als Sohn des Landschaftsmalers Jakob Gauermann geboren. Er erhielt die erste künstlerische Ausbildung gemeinsam mit seinem älteren Bruder Carl durch den Vater. 1821 entstanden Friedrichs erste Naturstudien und Kopien nach Alten Meistern. 1824 bis 1827 absolvierte er eine Ausbildung an der Landschaftsschule der Wiener Akademie. Im Sommer 1829 war er bereits mit zwei Werken an der Münchner Kunstausstellung beteiligt. Gauermann unternahm zahlreiche Reisen ins das Salzkammergut, an den Königssee, in die Steiermark und nach Tirol, oftmals in Begleitung von Josef Höger. Zu Beginn der dreißiger Jahre tauchten im Œuvre neue Themen wie Jagszenen und Darstellungen von Tierkämpfen auf; er war oft als Jagdgast eingeladen, unter anderem auch von Erzherzog Johann an den Brandhof. 1834 begleitete Gauermann Philipp Wirth nach München und traf mit zahlreichen Künstlerkollegen zusammen. Im selben Jahr wurde eines seiner Gemälde in der Royal Academy in London präsentiert. 1836 stand Gauermann am Höhepunkt seiner Karriere und wurde zum Mitglied der Wiener Akademie ernannt. 1838, im Jahr seiner Hochzeit mit Elisabeth Kurtz, folgte die erste Italienreise u. a. nach Venedig, Padua, Verona und an den Gardasee. Zwei Jahre später wurde er ordentliches Mitglied des Münchner Kunstvereins. Seine zweite Italienreise 1843, gemeinsam mit Gustav Reinhold, führte ihn u. a. nach Triest, Venedig und Mailand. 1855 wurden vier seiner Bilder erfolgreich auf der Pariser Weltausstellung gezeigt. Friedrich Gauermann starb am 7. Juli 1862 in seiner Wohnung in Wien.
